NCTE and Colleagues Support Incarcerated Trans People in Court Brief

Last week, NCTE joined the National Center for Lesbian Rights, Lambda Legal, the National Trans Bar Association, and other advocacy organizations in filing a “friend of the court” brief in support of Shiloh Quine and other trans prisoners in Quine v. California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

This case has already brought about a landmark settlement that included an end to California’s blanket ban on transition-related surgical treatment for transgender prisoners. The current appeal concerns access to commissary items consistent with a prisoner’s gender identity.

Now, we are asking a federal appeals court to take a closer look at the discriminatory treatment of trans people in prisons. The brief calls for the court to apply heightened scrutiny when examining discrimination against transgender people.
